The tang is signedBizen no Kuni Osafune ju Sukesada Saku. Bizen Sukesada reflects a long line of smiths working in Bizen provice from ca. 1500-1870 that are well-known and respected. The papers state this sword was made by a Sukesda in the 1680â??s making this sword Shinto and also likely made by the generation known asKozuke no Daijo Sukesada.

Historical context :In 1845, the regulations now indicate that senior, junior and even warrant officers must have the saber in service dress. This model therefore standardizes the armament for these ranks. Two models are created for this sword: one for warrant officers and junior officers, and one for senior officers. The main difference between these models is the blade, slightly curved with two hollow sides for warrant officers and junior officers, and straight with four hollow sides for senior officers. In 1855, the saber was slightly modified: the leather scabbard was replaced by a sheet steel scabbard (except for warrant officers who kept the leather scabbard until 1870), and the junior officer's blade was narrowed: it will henceforth be called the 1855 model saber. It was still in use during the First World War, the combat officers considered the 1882 model which had been attributed to them too fragile. It is still in service, and equips the 1st and 2nd Republican Guard infantry regiments.Total length : 90 cmLength without sheath : 86,5 cmBlade length : 72 cmHandle length : 14 cmBlade width : 2,8 cmDescription :Superb and extremely rare French officer's saber based on the 1845 model. 1870 Katana sword made at Bizen osafune by Yokoyama a well known sword maker there in this time period. I did get it authenticated verbally by Mike Yamasaki ,well known and respected in the world of Japanese swords.lt is unfortunate that somewhere along it's past 154 years someone cleaned most of the patina off of the tang. You can see it has a family crest on the handle from from what I could find crossed falcon feathers, the family crest of Takanoha. The blade needs to be polished and could use sharpening. This auction is for a rare famous original antique U.S. M-1832 Artillery Short Sword w/original scabbard, marked on the sword: N.P. AMES - SPRINGFIELD - UNITED STATES - 1842 - and marked on the scabbard ball tip: J.H. - This classic weapon was made in the style of an ancient Roman Short Sword, was used in the Mexican War, in the Civil War, and up to the 1870's by the U.S. There have been some that have been dug up in Civil War Battlefields. This classic double edge short sword has the iconic American Eagle logos on the tang and both sides of the brass handle pommel, single and double fullers on both sides, a tight and solid brass handle, a little spot of micro pitting on one edge, overall still in near excellent condition for approx. 182 years old. The brass hardware on the scabbard is missing one of the rivets but overall is still in near excellent condition also. Please zoom in in all pictures for details. The sword measures 25" with a 19" blade and in the scabbard the total weight is 3 lbs. 1 oz.*No shipping to Russia, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, China, U.K., Ireland, Philippines, or other countries that prohibit importation of items considered weapons. This auction is for the pictured sword/saber and scabbard. It is made by Henry Wilkinson of Pall Mall London. It has other marking on it as well including "By Appointment," A serial number, a Stat of Damascus (Star of King Solomon) with a gold colored disc in the center and the initials HW. There are numerous engravings and the blade and some simple engraving on the handle as well. The blade is approximately 32.5 inches long. I am no expert on these.....I believe it's a 1845 Pattern saber made around the mid to late 1870s, and I believe this would have originally been issued to a British Calvary Officer. There is some patina and wear on the blade and handle, and there is some wear on the scabbard as well. Overall, given its age, I'd say this is in good to very good condition. NO shipping outside of the USA. Check out my other auctions for more great stuff.IA (Condition: Pre-Owned)
Very fine Solingen-made Masonic Knights Templar sword and scabbard. It doesn't have the marking of the maker, but to an experienced, knowledgeable collector it's obvious the sword was made by either W. Clauberg or Kirschbaum of Solingen, both of which produced swords equal to any in the world in the 1800s.

eBay Up for auction is an interesting piece. One of my personal favorites which ?I’ve owned for years and years and I’m finally selling it..I’m not quite sure what it is, almost certainly the blade was exchanged or is different from the original and is an unmarked beautiful quality steel. Hand forged as you can feel the uneven texture to the flat of the blade. My guess was a better shorter blade (and scabbard) was added for use as a naval cutlass. (Just a guess) I believe it may be a modified Austrian officers sword circa 1850 -1870? Beautiful feel to this sword. ?it has a really nice design weight and function. Defiantly designed for combat in close quarters. Please see photos as they are the largest part of the description. This item is an antique (well over a hundred years) and show wear and use. It was designed as a weapon of war and should be treated as such. This is not a toy and may have been used in combat. Please ask any questions you may have before bidding. (Condition: Pre-Owned)
Is consistent with the legendary Chasseurs a Pied (elite light infantry). Very nice shape! Gives a nice ring when tapped, and sword is solid and lively in hand. There is a bit of wire missing from the grip (which is horn, I think), and a few minor scuffs and scratches and tarnish marks from this fine weapon's 152 year life.
